Guemes Island: This unspoiled San Juan island is a laid-back retreat
By GREG JOHNSTON P-I REPORTER GUEMES ISLAND -- For a few bucks, you can catch a five-minute ferry ride 30 years back in time, to an island where most people wave at everyone they pass, where you can wander the beach without treading on anyone's personal space, or ride your bicycle and draw smiles instead of frowns from motorists. Guemes Island is one of the least known of the inhabited San Juan Islands, a great place to go if you are, say, a fugitive from technology or want to isolate yourself from the race-pace of civilization.
